Timing, and the spots that do not wash off
Late spring is the natural time for a full clean. The winter rain has finished throwing grit at the house and the pollen has mostly dropped. Homes with a lot of glass, or glass facing the water, tend to settle into twice a year: once after winter and once before the holidays. There is little point booking in the middle of a wet stretch beyond getting the film off, since the next storm will spot it again.
Hard water spotting is the one problem a normal wash will not fix, and it is common on any pane a sprinkler or irrigation head reaches. The mineral has bonded to the glass, so it has to be dissolved rather than scrubbed. Once the etching goes deep enough, the glass itself is marked and no treatment will bring it back. Deal with it early, and move the sprinkler head while you are at it.
